Ball Valves 6 in. through 48 in. (150 mm through 1200 mm)
standard by American Water Works Association, 12/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

This standard covers gray-iron, ductile-iron, and cast-steel, flanged-end, tight-shutoff, shaft- or trunnion-mounted, full-port, double- and single-seated ball valves for pressures up to 300 psi (2100 kPa) in sizes from 6-in. through 48-in. (150-mm through 1200-mm) diameter for use in water systems having freshwater with a pH greater than 6 and temperatures less than 125F (52C). 1.1.1 Design velocity. The valve assembly and components shall be structurally suitable for a velocity of 35 ft/s (10.7 m/s) at design pressure and shall be within the allowable stresses noted in Sec. 3.1.1. 1.1.2 Pressure class and design pressure. The classes of valves covered by this standard shall be designed for the following maximum rated pressure. Rate pressure is defined as the design pressure at 100F (38C). The following items are the principal changes in this standard from the previous edition: Information on power actuators has been deleted, and a reference to ANSI/AWWA C540, Standard for Power-Actuating Devices for Valves and Sluice Gates, has been added (Sec. 3.2.8); The location of the resilient seat now includes either the valve body or the valve ball (Sec. 3.2.3.1); The definitions in Sec. 1.2 have been modified to conform to current standard AWWA definitions; Soft metric equivalents have been added; Information on warranties has been deleted. See Foreword, Sec. VII, item 27; A requirement to mark direction of flow on single-seated valves has been added (Sec. 6.1.1); Proof-of-design testing requirements have been added (Sec. 5.3); and The standard has been revised to conform to the current style and format of AWWA standards.
