Residual Chlorine Monitoring in Water Treatment
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

The measurement of chlorine residual associated with chlorine application equipment is a critical operation in the water treatment plant. The ability to measure residual chlorine, whether free, combined or total, can contribute significantly to improvement of efficiency of the disinfection process. This paper discusses monitoring chlorine and includes sections on reasons for using chlorine, the degree of dissociation, different chemical reactions involving chlorine, and an amperometric method for the detection of free available chlorine. Among the disinfectants available and in use in water treatment, only chlorine provides a lasting post-treatment residual measurement into the distribution system.
