This powerpoint presentation outlines innovations in sanitation indeveloping countries. The presentation relates how direct benefits from sanitation are increasinglyrecognized; but, unprecedented levels of demand exist and everyday a huge pollution burden of2 million tons of human waste isdisposed of in water courses. A map is provided that shows the relative size of the MDG sanitation target for each countrybased on the number of installations required through to 2015. The challenges facing the sanitation sector are listed, along with a recent paradigm shift that includes: recent trends in sanitation focusing on demand driven approachesfor low cost sanitation facilities; and, the benefits arising from investment in demand responsiveapproaches are likely to be greater due to more long runsustainability and increased capture of drivers of demand such ascomfort and social status. Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is an approach that focuses on outcomes of defecation-free communities bytriggering collective behavior for the community as a whole. The core concept of igniting change is outlined, along with factors that make the CLTS approach different from the traditional approach. Addressing scale and ensuring sustainability, the need for social marketing for sanitation, elements of a marketing program, the reasons people want sanitation, implications of social marketing, the unknown impacts on health, sanitation and education, government expenditure, and sanitation technologies.
