An Innovative Technique for Controlling Nitrification in Chloraminating Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/17/2005

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines a pilot study at the Mohawk Valley Water Authority (MVWA) that evaluated chloramines as a method for nitrification control. Objectives of the pilot study included: identify a robust nitrification controlstrategy so that MVWA can implementchloramines if it chooses;evaluate several nitrification controlapproaches on the pilot scale usingfinished water from Hinckley WTP;demonstrate to the State that nitrificationcan be controlled/prevented in the MVWAsystem; and, provide recommendations on integratingmost suitable nitrification strategy intochloramines system design. The pilot study methods included: four independent treatment trains representingHinckley WTP finished water quality and employingdifferent nitrification control techniques(water carboys with test solutions, followed by a glass bead bio-reactor, then 400 feet of flexible black irrigationpipe-plug flow reactor);sampling 1-2x per week;seeding of glass bead reactor with Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB);analyzed for key parameters in MVWA lab; and,use of contract lab for chlorite.
