Description
Many water treatment utilities are investigating alternatives for complying withincreasingly strict regulations pertaining to enhanced coagulation, disinfectionbyproducts, and filtered water turbidity. A key factor for meeting new goals for controlof disinfection byproducts at many utilities is the removal of naturally occurring organicmatter (NOM). One emerging alternative for meeting these regulations is the MagneticIon Exchange (MIEX®) process. The MIEX® process, using a strong base anionic resin, has been shown to enable the reduction of naturally occurring organic matter (NOM)concentrations and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. Additional benefits of thisprocess include reductions in the required amount of coagulant and a capability forremoving inorganic anions to meet treatment goals in other areas of water quality. The paper discusses the process of applying the magnetized anion exchange resin in a mixed tank where the ion exchange occurs, lists the four participating test locations that provided the desired range of conditions, and discusses results.
