Protocol for Estimating Rejection of Trace Organic Compounds by High Pressure Membranes
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/15/2003

Document Format: PDF

Description

Based on the fact that many micropollutants such as endocrine disrupting compounds(EDCs) and pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have a molecular weight of &gt150dalton, it is expected that nanofiltration (NF) or reverse osmosis (RO) membranes would control these compounds. In order to relate the physical/chemicalproperties of these compounds to membrane properties, and to develop a database whichcan be used for the prediction of rejection performance of a membrane for a certaincompound, it is essential to establish an experimental protocol to rationally determine therejection rate. In this study, it was shown that the determination of rejection rate is notstraightforward due to adsorption of compounds on membranes, especially whenhydrophobic and electro-statically neutral compounds are examined. The experimentalresults demonstrated that a relatively large amount of the feed water needed to be filteredfor saturation. Includes 13 references, tables, figures.
